About TokenCapEx

TokenCapEx is a buyer-side reference for booking token, compute and inference spend. It answers one question well: you signed a spend item, so which ledger line does it belong on, and which paragraph says so.

Why instrument-first

A FinOps lead does not arrive asking what capitalization means. They arrive holding a specific instrument, a reserved GPU commitment, a prepaid credit block, a training run, and a deadline to write the position into a memo. Most references are organized by the standard, which forces the reader to already know which standard applies. This site is organized by the instrument you signed, then resolves to a posting and the standard that governs it. The order matches how the work actually happens.

Why standard-anchored, not vendor-driven

The site sells nothing and recommends no vendor. Every posting is tied to primary FASB and IFRS material rather than to a cloud provider's billing narrative or a tool's marketing. The classifier and the reference pages read from one citation registry, so a posting and the page that justifies it cannot drift apart.

Scope

In scope: the mapping of token, compute and inference spend to CapEx, prepaid, cost of revenue and OpEx under US GAAP and IFRS, the commitment-versus-consumption and term-length judgements, and the six governing standards. Out of scope: tax treatment, provider-side GPU depreciation, transfer pricing, and anything that would require your specific facts. This is a position and a citation, not accounting advice.

Who maintains it

TokenCapEx is published by Digital Signet and maintained by Oliver Wakefield-Smith. The methodology and the citation apparatus are set out on how we cite.
